Donbas Think Tank is an independent non-profit think tank “in action”. We explore the problems of Donbas and offer solutions to them. Our team is a part of Donetsk regional organisation of All-Ukrainian NGO "Committee of Voters of Ukraine".

Our goal:

to shape Ukrainian civic consciousness among the residents of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Our mission:

to facilitate the formation of Ukrainian Donbas as a region of sustainable development, peace and prosperity.

What do residents of uncontrolled Donetsk region think and feel – survey results

Donbas Think Tank is publishing a report on the survey “Specific features of the mindset and identity of the residents of controlled and uncontrolled territories of the Donetsk region”

From 30 May to 13 June 2016 on request on request of Donbas Think Tank a Ukrainian office of the international research company IFAK conducted a survey among the residents of controlled and uncontrolled parts of the Donetsk region. The research aimed at examining the effect of the conflict in the East of Ukraine on the minds of region’s inhabitants and their attitude towards Ukraine.

According to the study finding the residents of both parts of the Donetsk region still share common social and cultural characteristics; however throughout two years of conflict certain differences between them emerged, such as:

• The ongoing formation of the identity “a DPR citizen” (DPR – Donetsk People’s Republic) among the residents of the uncontrolled territory (18% of respondents);
• A tendency of increasing distance between the residents of the uncontrolled territory and Ukrainian state;
• A fear of return under Ukraine’s control among the residents of an uncontrolled territory (28% of respondents).

Information surface of Donetsk region:challenges and possibilities (2017)

Donbas Think Tank is publishing an analytical report “Information surface of Donetsk region: challenges and possibilities” (2017).

The policy paper analyses the information surface of Donetsk region – controlled and occupied parts. Key objectives are assessments of dynamics of providing Ukrainian broadcast at the territory of Donetsk region during last three years war conflict; main problems of information surface and propositions for providing the information reintegration. The influence of Russian propaganda to Donetsk residents’ attitudes as well as other Ukrainian regions was analyzed. Considered technical possibilities of Ukrainian broadcast there, content local media, features of information policy at the occupied part of Donetsk region. Attention was paid to specials of Ukrainian media content and governmental communications. Technical possibilities were analyzed to improve system of Ukrainian broadcast at controlled and occupied parts of Donetsk region. Done proposals are about main directions of information policy and not linked with one scenario. But the proposals are flexible and correspond with different strategies: short and long time reintegration or frozen conflict. Read more in the analytical report

Donbas Think Tank is publishing a report on the survey “Specific features of the mindset and identity of the residents of controlled and occupied territories of the Donetsk region” (2018)

Analytical report based on the results of a second wave survey “Specific features of the mindset and identity of the residents of controlled and occupied territories of the Donetsk region” (2018) which was conducted from 10 to 26 December 2017 on request of Ministry of information policy of Ukraine by Ukrainian office of the international research company IFAK, Donbas Think Tank and National Endowment for Democracy. At the controlled part – 705 respondents, at the occupied – 600. First wave of the survey was conducted in June 2016.

Among the main results of the survey are such as:

 – increasing level of civil identity of the residents of controlled part of Donetsk region;

 - keeping strong horizontal ties between inhabitants of the occupied part and residents of the other Ukrainian regions;

- increasing level among residents of occupied part of a fear about possible freezing conflict;

-  deteriorating of residents’ controlled part Donetsk region assessments of the differences between life standards at the both parts.
