Dmytro Tkachenko Appointed an Advisor of Information Policy Minister

In a position of advisor, the Executive Director of Donbas Think Tank Dmytro Tkachenko will be dealing with information reintegration of Donbas.

On November 10, 2016 during a briefing on information reintegration projects, the Minister of Information Policy of Ukraine Yuriy Stets announced the establishment of a position of the Minister’s advisor on information reintegration of Donbas and the appointment of Dmytro Tkachenko, who is the executive director of Donbas Think Tank, for the position.

“Not long ago I met Dmytro. He does a lot to restore Donbas ... Today we want to present a new position of the Minister’s advisor”, - said Deputy Minister of Information Policy Artem Bidenko.

Dmytro Tkachenko explained that the team of Donbas Think Tank has been working on the elaboration of a Communication strategy on Donbas reintegration since January 2016. The strategy is based on a sociological research on the features of consciousness and identity of the residents of controlled and uncontrolled territories of Donetsk region. “We need to understand that we do not fully understand Donbas. Our study was eye-opening for us. The Ukrainian state should speak with those citizens residing on the uncontrolled areas to reduce their level of distrust towards Ukraine and their fear of returning to Ukraine”, - said Tkachenko.

The implementation of a Communication Strategy will allow to increase loyalty towards Ukraine among the residents of controlled and uncontrolled parts of Donbas and will strengthen a sense of community between Ukrainian citizens on uncontrolled territories and other regions of Ukraine.

The strategy will be presented to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine by the end of 2016.

What do residents of uncontrolled Donetsk region think and feel – survey results

Donbas Think Tank is publishing a report on the survey “Specific features of the mindset and identity of the residents of controlled and uncontrolled territories of the Donetsk region”

From 30 May to 13 June 2016 on request on request of Donbas Think Tank a Ukrainian office of the international research company IFAK conducted a survey among the residents of controlled and uncontrolled parts of the Donetsk region. The research aimed at examining the effect of the conflict in the East of Ukraine on the minds of region’s inhabitants and their attitude towards Ukraine.

According to the study finding the residents of both parts of the Donetsk region still share common social and cultural characteristics; however throughout two years of conflict certain differences between them emerged, such as:

• The ongoing formation of the identity “a DPR citizen” (DPR – Donetsk People’s Republic) among the residents of the uncontrolled territory (18% of respondents);
• A tendency of increasing distance between the residents of the uncontrolled territory and Ukrainian state;
• A fear of return under Ukraine’s control among the residents of an uncontrolled territory (28% of respondents).
